LIVE-IT-OUT GUIDE
PMC BIBLE MARATHON: SESSION 15
Digging Deeper into
Scripture
Opening Discussion – Difficult Decisions: Recall a time when
you had to make a difficult decision. What was this decision like? What kind of
reasons helped you to decide?
Read Ruth 1:1-22.
Context – “[T]he days when
the judges ruled” (Ruth 1:1) were approximately 300 years between Israel’s
entrance into Canaan and the anointing of their first king. Judges 21:25 sums
up this period: “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what
was right in his own eyes.” Despite the spiritual and political unrest during
that era, the book of Ruth shows that God was still working to bring about His
redemptive purposes (albeit through very unlikely characters!).
1) Six people are
identified by name in chapter 1. What series of events concentrates the
narrative to only two (Naomi and Ruth) by the end of the chapter?
2) Do you think it was
right for Elimelech and Naomi to move to Moab? Why or why not?
3) Why does Naomi keep
urging her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab (v8-13)?
4) Outline the two
different responses of Orpah and Ruth and what motivated them. Use your own
words.
5) How do the people
of Bethlehem respond to Naomi and Ruth’s return? How does Naomi respond?
MAIN IDEA: If
possible, as a LG, draft a sentence that captures the main idea for Ruth
1:1-22.
APPLICATION: How
can we live out Ruth 1:1-22 in the coming week? How can we apply this Main Idea
to our lives?
