Title: Christ is Our Sufficiency

Speaker: Ms Tan Tiang Keng

(The sermon recording and slides can be found on the PMC website and MyPMC App.)

A)     Key Lessons

1.      Beware that we may be tempted to fall back on what is familiar and safe.

2.      True Sufficiency is found in Christ.

3.      Offer ourselves in obedience to God.

B)     Key Application Questions

1)      In times of crisis, how can we better turn to Christ as our sufficiency?

2)      (Quoting from the sermon): “We are purified in Christ, not for any other thing, but for one thing: To serve the living God.”

Do we desire a clean conscience on terms other than serving God? Why?

Digging Deeper into Scripture

The book of Hebrews is written to Jewish Christians who were tempted to leave the Christian faith and to return to Judaism. Urging them to persevere, the author appeals to the superiority of Jesus. Jesus is better than the angels, for He is the divine Son of God; He is better than Moses, for Moses was created by Him; and He is better than the Levitical priests, for He always lives to make intercession.

Going into chapter 8, the author argues that since Jesus has a better ministry, the covenant He mediates is also better (quoting Jeremiah 31). Chapter 9 expounds on this further, explaining the superior nature this new covenant mediated by Jesus.

Read Hebrews 9:1-15

1)      Consider verses 1 to 10. Despite all the amazing details of the old covenant, it was not without significant weaknesses.

a)      According to verse 8, what was the Holy Spirit indicating through the old tabernacle system?

b)      According to verses 9 and 10, what was the old sacrificial system incapable of doing?

2)      Consider verses 11 to 15. Being the ‘high priest of the good things that have come’, Jesus is able to establish the promises of the new covenant.

a)      According to verse 11, how was the sanctuary Christ entered as high priest different than the one described in verses 1 to 7?

b)      According to verse 12, how was Christ’s entrance into that sanctuary different from the way the high priest entered the sanctuary of the ‘first covenant’?

c)      By entering the true sanctuary of God with His own blood, what did Christ achieve? Try to describe this using your own words.

MAIN IDEA: If possible, as a LG, draft a sentence that captures the main idea for Hebrews 9:1-15.

APPLICATION: How can we live out Hebrews 9:1-15 in the coming week? How can we apply this Main Idea to our lives?
