Key Lessons

With regard to obeying God’s laws

A.                      Be steadfast and strong (white knuckled courage of chazak).

B.                      Guard your boundaries (hedge of shamar).

C.                       Intentionally take action (doing of asah).

With regard to the world around you:

A.                      Do not honour their ways (honour of zakar).

B.                      Do not be influenced by their beliefs (mixing of bow).

C.                       Do not serve like they do by dichotomizing (work is worship of abad).

YOU ARE IN A MARRIAGE COVENANT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

So On, Straight On! Turn neither to the right or the left.

Digging Deeper into Scripture

Context – About twenty-five years have passed since Israel crossed the Jordan and began to take possession of the promised land. During that time, Joshua’s leadership kept Israel loyal to God. But now, Joshua is about to die, and he is concerned that Israel might turn away from God in his absence. Therefore, Joshua calls the Israelites together to hear a farewell message of challenge and warning.

1)          If you had to give a farewell speech, what would you most want to say?

Read Joshua 23:1-16

2)          Consider verses 1 to 5.

a)           How does Joshua begin his farewell speech?

b)          Why do you think he begins this way?

3)          What is the nature of the charge given to Israel in verses 6 to 11?

4)          Joshua ends his speech with a stern warning that the Lord is not only faithful in keeping His promises but also His threats (v12-16).

a)           What kind of warnings are given to Israel?

b)          What kind of warnings are given to believers in the New Testament? Consider Jn 15:5-6, Gal 5:19-21; Heb 10:26-31.

MAIN IDEA: If possible, as a LG, draft a sentence that captures the main idea for Joshua 23:1-16.

APPLICATION: How can we live out Joshua 23:1-16 in the coming week? How can we apply this Main Idea to our lives?
